Summary

A group of women and children posed in front of the Kangarilla Post Office, a wooden building with a thatched roof. A note on the reverse of the photograph, attributed to the donor, identifies the location as Kangarilla and the group as 'Old Mrs Thorpe, Mrs Bennet or Bernet and daughter and grandchildren'. Charles Thorpe and his second wife Sarah (seated, wearing a bonnet) ran the post office in the 1860s. A daughter by Sarah's first marriage, Elizabeth Thorpe Steer, married Charles Barnett, suggesting that she is the woman on the right.
